Freyja is available
for workshops, private lessons and small group classes
Bellydance class consists of warm up, drills and varying exercises
designed to improve body awareness, posture, and stability for
dancing. Listening exercises help develop the ability to feel
the music. Theory includes creative breakdown of muscular technique
involved in this dance form and tips to get the most out of your
practice There is a focus on moving from the core with strength
and grace. Classes are mixed level and modifications are given
to meet individual students needs and to keep the class challenging,
yet not overwhelming for beginners as well as advanced students.
Pilates is a movement discipline that focuses on the core postural
muscles that are essential to providing support for the spine
and to helping keep the body balanced. Pilates exercises teach
awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and strengthen
the deep torso muscles, which are important to help alleviate
and prevent back pain. Pilates is an excellent addition to belly
dance in that it conditions the muscles that are necessary to
develop a healthy and strong dance posture while deepening body
awareness. This awareness of the individual muscle groups in the
dancer’s body (particularly in the torso) helps in learning
and improving various isolations used in the dance.

Bio
Freyja began her study of dance in early childhood. Her mother
studied Flamenco Dance in Spain and performed it on tour across
Europe. Freyja’s dance/movment background includes ballet,
jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, club dancing, flamenco, Indian
and Indonesian dance as well as yoga, pilates and Taiji/qigong.
She has developed her own unique style drawing from many of these
sources. Freyja has studied American Cabaret, Turkish and Egyptian
styles of belly dance, as well as American Tribal style, which
later led to Tribal Fusion.
Freyja fell in love with belly dance through her first teacher,
Ansuya, who inspired her to pursue this dance form wholeheartedly.
Over the years she has studied with many different teachers and
counts among her biggest influences Ansuya, Frederique David,
and Suhaila Salimpour.
In 2005, Freyja joined forces with Frederique with whom she taught
and performed in the bay area dance co-operative Bellygroove.
She is currently focusing on her solo career and collaborations
with various other Bay Area dancers and musicians, including Jennifer
Faust, SooozhyQ and DJ Amar.
In 2007, Freyja became a partner in the successful Electric Vardo
project, where she co-produces night club events that show case
the Bay Area's hottest dance talent and DJs. She is also co-producer
of Hip’n’Bass, San Francsico's monthly event that
takes place every last Thursday at Underground SF.
Freyja has taught and performed all over the United States, Canada
and Europe at such notable venues as the Staples Center (home
of the Los Angeles Lakers), The Ford Ampitheatre and various high
profile nightclubs and restaurants.
Freyja is credited with excellent technique and musical interpretation,
crisp isolations and original innovative choreography. As an instructor,
she gives a great presentation and breakdown of moves, while emphasizing
proper posture and movement in order to prevent injuries and gain
muscle strength that aids in healing. She has made an extensive
study of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics, and uses this
knowledge to help students master the motions and gain the needed
strength and flexibility to improve their dance. Freyja’s
love of therapeutic healing arts lead her to obtain her yoga teacher
training certification at the acclaimed Iyengar Yoga Institute
of San Francisco. She is also certified to teach mat and apparatus
pilates classes by IMX Pilates. Freyja continues to study various
movement disciplines and is currently focusing on the Alexander
technique and principles of qigong to enhance her own practice
and compliment her teaching.
